As we journey together through the “Entangled Kingdoms,” something I would like to do is share resources with you all that I’m looking at that helps inform what we talk about on the podcast. You may be familiar with Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 creation accounts, but how familiar are you with non-biblical creation accounts? Have you ever stopped to wonder how other world cultures have sought to make sense of creation? Of course, modern day cultures tend to look at science and adopt ideas like evolution, but how about ancient cultures?
If you’d like to join me:
Read through Genesis 1 and 2, making use of two or three different translations. We will talk about additional steps you can take here in next week’s episode, but use whatever bible study methods you prefer. I recommend at least thinking through literary and historical context.
Read through the Babylonian creation account, called the Enuma Elish. You can find it free to read online here: https://www.sacred-texts.com/ane/enuma.htm
Read through the Egyptian creation account. You can find an example here: https://www.crystalinks.com/egyptcreation.html
Then, cross the globe and read Native American creation accounts: https://www.americanyawp.com/reader/the-new-world/indian-creation-stories/
For fun, jot down what elements are similar and what are different. Compare to Scripture.
Looking forward to discussing with you all in the future!
Another South American creation account, this time from ancient Peru: https://en-academic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/54245
